Food and hospitality / JETDIELINE

Popcorn box

The popcorn box is open at the top and has four outward-sloping walls, a side seam and a glued bottom. Length and width describe the upper opening; the base is smaller.

How the shape is constructed

Four trapezoidal walls form a truncated pyramid. They form a fan in the blank. The side seam and three bottom tabs are glued. Vertical height and the shared flare angle determine the smaller base area and sloping wall edges.

How it is assembled

Pre-break the blank along all creases and glue the side seam to the inside of the back wall. Apply adhesive to the bottom tabs, swing the base into position and press the tabs against the inside of the front and sides. The carton then stands open and can be nested.

Material and grain direction

Grain direction parallel to height: wall creases fold neatly and the tall walls remain stiff (check with the test printer).

Test fit, folding and closure on a sample made from the intended material. Confirm material thickness, grain direction and production steps with your printer.

Compare openings and closures for your food product. Check direct-contact material, moisture and grease resistance with the manufacturer.

What to consider for this construction

Flare angle

Outward wall slope from vertical; the base is shorter and narrower than the opening by 2 × height × tan(angle) and remains at least 30 mm wide.

Glue flap

Width of the glue flap used to glue the blank into a tube. The material requires a minimum width.

Glue flap angle

Angle at the ends of the glue flap; makes folding and erection easier.

Frequently asked questions

Is 110 × 75 mm the base dimension?

No. In the starting example, these values describe the upper inside opening. The outward-sloping walls make the base smaller. Height and flare angle determine the difference in both directions. If a particular footprint is needed, check the calculated base and erected sample; opening dimensions alone are insufficient.

Why is a greater slope rejected?

The base must retain at least 30 mm inside dimension on both sides. A tall carton with a small opening may fall below this limit even at an angle within the parameter range. popcornFlare.bottomMinimum checks this relationship. Reduce the slope or change the opening; individual values are not independently valid.

How is the bottom closed?

The construction uses a glued bottom with three bottom tabs. After gluing the side seam, swing the base into position and press the tabs against the inside of the front and sides. There is no selectable tuck bottom. Check adhesive application, assembly sequence and bottom hold in actual board because the calculation model does not assess the real glue bond.
