Folding cartons / JETDIELINE

Folding carton with snap-lock bottom

The snap-lock bottom closes with four interlocking flaps. Two side flaps sit inside; a nose on the back tucks under the front flap's tongue. Version 1 combines this bottom with a tuck lid. The calculation example uses folding carton board 400 g/m² and shows the flat dieline with creases and bottom cuts.

How the shape is constructed

The body is glued at the side glue flap. Closing the 1-2-3 bottom starts with the two side flaps, followed by the slotted flap on the front and the nose flap on the back. At the cuts, the flaps change layers. The bottom locks without its own adhesive bond; the lid closes with dust flaps and a tuck flap.

How it is assembled

Glue the glue flap and lay the carton flat. For filling, erect it, fold in side flaps 1 and 2, lay flap 3 with its tongue over them and tuck the nose of flap 4 under the tongue. After filling, fold in the dust flaps and insert the tuck flap.

Material and grain direction

Grain direction parallel to the height: wall creases along the grain, bottom and lid creases across it; the flaps remain stiff and the nose does not bend out from under the tongue (check with the test printer).

Test fit, folding and closure on a sample made from the intended material. Confirm material thickness, grain direction and production steps with your printer.

What to consider for this construction

Glue flap

Width of the glue flap used to glue the blank into a tube. The material requires a minimum width.

Glue flap angle

Angled ends of the glue flap; make folding and erection easier.

Tuck depth

How far the tuck flap extends into the box; at most about half the width (the height for a mailer).

Tuck flap radius

Corner radius of the tuck flap; limited by half the flap width or tuck depth.

Tuck flap shoulder

Side inset of the tuck flap relative to the lid, to allow easy insertion.

Frequently asked questions

In what order do I close the bottom?

First fold the two side flaps inwards, then the front flap with the cuts and finally the back's nose flap. The nose engages under the tongue; the layers change at the cuts. Check this sequence on a sample before filling, especially with thicker board and small inside dimensions.

Is the snap-lock bottom glued?

The bottom flaps interlock without their own adhesive bond. The body's side glue flap is still glued to form a tube. This distinguishes this bottom from the pre-glued crash-lock bottom. You must lock it when erecting; it does not form simply by opening the flat carton.

How much overlap is permitted?

flapOverlap starts at 10 mm and has a range from 2 to 40 mm. The model also limits overlap to 40 % of the bottom width. The table's maximum value therefore does not fit every inside dimension. Agree overlap and nose length together and check the bottom with the target board.
